ONE YEAR RECURRENCE OF UNILATERAL SYMPTOMATIC GROIN HERNIA UNDERGOING LICHTENSTEIN PROCEDURE HERNIO REPAIR USING HEAVYWEIGHT MESH VERSUS LIGHT WEIGHT MESH

Abstract
Backgrounds: Surgical procedure was still the gold standard for symptomatic groin
hernia in adult patients. For open mesh technique, according to 2018 Hernia
Guidelines suggested of using Lichtenstein technique as a procedure of choice.
Prosthetic reinforcement has become the standard treatment of groin hernias
compared to suture repair, since it significantly reduces the risk of recurrence and
chronic pain. There were many types of mesh could be used for this technique, the
most common types were heavy and light weight mesh. The aim of this study was
to investigate which type of mesh would has better recurrence free outcome after
a primary Lichtenstein hernia repair.
Methods: We conducted an analytic retrospective study on unilateral symptomatic
groin hernia patients undergoing Lichtenstein repair with single operator for 1 year
after the procedure. Data were taken from anamnesis and physical examination 1
year after the procedure as out patients follow up, and from the operation report
weather using HWM or LWM. The patients whose could not been evaluated during
this study follow up would be excluded.
Results: A total of 25 patients with unilateral groin hernia that done the Lichtenstein
repair. 12 patients was done with using the lightweight Mesh (LWM) and 13
patients done with heavy weight mesh (HWM). The follow up was done during 1
year from the procedure. There is no recurrence in both groups (p <0.05). There
were no post operative complication reported during this study.
Conclusion: There was no difference on one year recurrence free between two
groups. Heavy and light weight prolene mesh could be used safely on this
Lichtenstein procedure.
